Disaster Recovery with Veeam Cloud Connect Replication (VCCR) has been a passion of mine since I first saw it demoed at VeeamON 2015 by Luca Dell’Oca back when I was still at ZettaGrid. Seven years later, it’s hard to believe that I was on that same general session stage at the Aria Resort (slightly different screen setup) demoing Veeam Cloud Connect Replication… this time with CDP.
Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is a feature we released for vCenter to vCenter scenarios in v11 of Veeam Backup & Replication and for v12 we will be bringing it to VCCR from on premises VMware environments to Service Provider hosted VMware Cloud Director platforms. This allows the replication of Tier 1 workloads at ultra low RPOs without leveraging snapshots. We are also enabling CDP for VCD to VCD as well for Service Providers.
As mentioned above, I showed off this new capability at VeeamON 2022 with a demo of CDP doing its thing with Cloud Connect Replication. I used Veeam Backup & Replication itself as an example of a Tier 1 application to protect and simulated the failure of the backend database (now able to be PostGreSQL on Linux) and then recovered the backup database with a partial failure, meaning that the network was automatically extended from the on-premises location to the service provider cloud via the Network Extension Appliances. While that is not a new feature, it remains a critical differentiator for Veeam Cloud Connect Replication and makes the networking simple and efficient.
